Dorido’s

We went to dinner at a favorite of my great aunt and uncle, Dorido’s. They are famous for their fish and fish sammies. I am not so I had a burger. I am a firm believer that food feeds more than your tummy. It feeds your soul. This burger fed my soul. I also had 2 of these blue moon beers. I might have also had some of these French fries and onion rings. Oops. Now, my mom, aunt and great aunt want to teach me canasta. Old ladyhood here I come!

Lunch with Cabana

Lunch is at my great aunt Sissy’s house. We got here and I was starving. Thankfully, meatballs were simmering on the stove. I had one meatball sub with sliced Parmesan cheese. Below are also pictures of my godson and his father.

Good Morning, sports fans!

This morning was bright and beautiful. Ethan, my five year old cousin, made us breakfast. I had the chef’s special: monster eggs. It was an egg scrambled in the pan with ham and a sprinkle of cheddar cheese. I also toasted a piece of bread left over from dinner last night. I usually prefer whole grain, but it’s tough being choosy when you are staying at some one’s place. Today, we are planning on driving by the houses that my grandmother and grandfather grew up in. Since, I am posting from my iPhone, I plan on posting a wrap up post with all my good pictures next week when I get home. Later, we’re going to see my godson, Christian Cabana. He is just over 2 weeks old. I will post some cute pics when we get there. For now though, have a good day!

Naughty Food Blogger

No pictures from dinner. My aunt Nancy made cheesey broccoli casserole. It was sinful. This afternoon we went to a pastry shop so I bought chocolate covered strawberries and eclaires. That means for dessert I had a mini eclaire and strawberry. Yum. Now, I am drinking fruity white zin with ice in a beer glass. Classy.

Pittsburgh lunch

Lunch was at a restaurant called “The Old Place” just down the road from my great Aunt Nancy’s house. I had grilled cheese on wheat, homemade potato chips and a beer.

Greeting from the PA turnpike!

Just stopped in Lawn,Pa for some fuel. Got a banana, some oats with nuts and brown sugar, and a soy chi latte with some vanilla. It’s cold and rainy here. Gross. Thankfully, I have Jonathan Safran Foer’s book “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” on my iPod to keep me company. ( thanks, Serg, for recommending it!)

Okay, back on the road!

Skirt steak and Asparagus

I love my grill. In the summer, we use it almost every night to cook. Tonight, we grilled skirt steak drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with McCormick’s Montreal Steak Seasoning. The asparagus was also drizzled with olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper.

We like skirt steak since it has a nice fat content and cooks quickly, which is great for a week day meal. Being outside grilling has made ache for my favorite summertime treat- sweet corn. Oh. dear. God. Is it sweet corn season yet?

A VERY late lunch (oops!)

This is whole wheat rigatoni, artichoke hearts, spinach and LOTS of mozzarella cheese. I got this recipe from the most recent Real Simple Magazine. I love artichoke hearts. I could eat a whole can. All. by. myself. Yup, they are yummy.

Alright, back to working on my taxes and packing.

Banana Oatmeal

Good Morning!

This is Colby, my 11 month old black lab, and her favorite thing in the whole wide world is waking me up. She shakes her butt and wags her tail and is generally crazed by the idea of a new day!

This is our kitchen floor where she hangs out while we cook. Sometimes, she will be right behind me. She’s pretty cute.

So, on to breakfast. I have always had a weird relationship with oatmeal. In college, I would make those instant packages in microwave. They were tasty but have a bunch of not so awesome stuff in them. As an adult, my husband would make them for me, but only with water. Nothing else. Not only is that boring, it isn’t tasty. It wasn’t until I stumbled upon Kath Eats Real Food, a blog by a kick ass gal named Kath (duh), that I fell in love with oatmeal. (I should mention quickly that I adore Starbucks new oatmeal, too.)

Kath makes her oatmeal with equal parts milk, oats and water. I used 1/4 cup of each because I find that I get full quickly when it comes to oatmeal. She also puts 1/2 a banana into the oats right at the beginning and stirs the oats the whole time to melt them into the oatmeal. The banana makes this oatmeal. For reals. Here is Kath’s video on oats. To my oatmeal, I added a pinch of salt at the beginning. Once the oats are thickened, I added 1 tablespoon of Bob’s Redmill Flaxseed Meal and 1/2 tablespoon of brown sugar. I also stir in a wee bit of vanilla extract, this doesn’t really taste like much of anything, but the smell is intoxicating. The best part of this oatmeal? THE PEANUT BUTTER!

My favorite peanut butter in the entire universe is Peanut Butter and Co.’s White Chocolate Wonderful. If you haven’t tried it, you are missing out. I use it in my oatmeal but my husband will eat it right out of the jar. In fact, we hide this stuff from each other because we have been known to eat a whole jar in a weekend.

I also had a glass of 2% milk with a little bit of NesQuick chocolate syrup. We use this brand and not Hershey’s (even though we live an hour from Hershey, PA!) because Nestle doesn’t use high fructose corn syrup. While we are not food puritans, we do try to stay away from that nasty stuff. In fact, we generally follow the gospel of Michael Pollan (more on that in future posts).

Anyhow, I have lots to do today before I head of to sunny Pittsburgh, PA to spend time with my family! Look for another post after dinner!

Sleeping dog and iphone test.

This is how my dog sleeps. Also, this is a test post from my iPhone. See y’all tomorrow!
